Stuck on a Corroded or Rusted Faucet Nut? Here's How to Free It
You're halfway through swapping out an old faucet, the new one is sitting on the counter still in its box, and the mounting nut — or the supply-line nut — up under the sink is rusted solid. It won't turn. You've already twisted the wrench until your knuckles hit the cabinet wall, and nothing. Take a breath. This is one of the most common places a "quick" faucet swap goes sideways, and there's a right order of operations to free that nut without cracking your sink or flooding the cabinet. Here's how the pros do it.
First: shut off the water
Before you touch a wrench, kill the water. There are usually two small shutoff valves under the sink — one for hot, one for cold. Turn them fully clockwise. If they're seized, corroded, or missing entirely, go shut off the main water valve for the whole house instead.
Then open the faucet on top to relieve the pressure in the lines and let any trapped water drain out. Finally, lay an old towel across the bottom of the cabinet and set a small bucket or bowl under the connections. Water damage lives in that cabinet base, and a $2 towel is cheaper than a warped particleboard cabinet floor. Grab your headlamp and gloves — you'll be working blind and upside down otherwise.
The right tools
The difference between a five-minute job and a two-hour fight is almost always having the right tool. Gather these before you start:
- A basin wrench — this is the hero tool. Its long shaft and self-adjusting jaw reach up into the cramped space behind the sink basin where a normal wrench simply can't fit. If you don't own one, it's about $15 and worth every penny.
- Penetrating oil — PB B'laster or Liquid Wrench. Not WD-40 if you can help it; the dedicated penetrants creep into rusted threads far better.
- An adjustable wrench and/or channel-lock pliers for the supply-line nuts you can actually reach.
- A headlamp so both hands stay free.
- Gloves — rusted metal edges and old plumbing gunk are no fun on bare skin.
Step-by-step to break it loose
- Soak the nut in penetrating oil. Spray it generously all the way around, then walk away. Give it 15 to 30 minutes — longer is better. Reapply a couple of times if it's badly corroded. This is the step everyone skips, and it's the one that does most of the work.
- Seat the basin wrench squarely on the nut. Make sure the jaw is fully engaged and not just catching a corner. A slipping wrench rounds off the nut and turns a bad day into a worse one.
- Apply steady, firm counterclockwise pressure. Instead of yanking with everything you've got, tap the end of the wrench handle with your palm or a small hammer to "shock" it loose. Sudden, sharp impulses break a rust bond better than a slow, straining pull — and they're far less likely to crack the sink.
- Give the nut a few light taps. A gentle rap directly on the nut with a wrench or hammer sends vibration through the threads and cracks the corrosion holding them together. Then try turning again.
- Careful heat, as a last non-destructive resort. Metal expands with heat, which can break the bond. A small handheld torch or a heat gun on the metal nut can help — but this is the danger zone. Never use flame or high heat anywhere near plastic supply lines, PEX tubing, wood cabinets, or anything flammable. If you're not fully confident, skip it.
Patience beats brute force. The single most common mistake we see is homeowners cranking harder instead of letting the penetrating oil do its job. Give it real time to soak — go grab lunch — and reapply. And while you've got the cabinet open, replace those brittle old supply lines with new braided-steel ones. They're a few dollars, and a burst 15-year-old supply line is exactly how cabinets flood at 2 a.m.
When it still won't move: cut it off
Sometimes a nut is so far gone that no amount of oil or tapping will save it. That's fine — you're replacing it anyway. The goal now is to cut the nut off without damaging the sink or the lines you want to keep. A few options:
- A rotary tool (Dremel) with a cutting wheel — precise and great in tight spots. Cut a slot through the nut, then crack it off.
- A nut splitter — a clamp-style tool that bites into the nut and splits it cleanly with no sparks or dust.
- A mini hacksaw — slow but works when there's no room for anything powered.
Whatever you use, slide a piece of scrap metal or a putty knife between the tool and the sink or supply line to protect them. Once the old nut is off, replace it with new hardware and new braided-steel supply lines. Do not reuse the old corroded nuts — they'll just seize again, and you'll be back under there next year.
Know when to call a pro
Here's the honest part. There are a few situations where the smart move is to stop and pick up the phone:
- The shutoff valves themselves are corroded and won't fully close.
- There's no shutoff valve at all, so you're relying on the house main and racing the clock.
- You're wedged into a cramped cabinet with old iron fittings that need to come apart carefully.
- You've reached the point where one wrong move means a cracked porcelain sink or a flooded cabinet.
